Phuket Downtown Market

Phuket Downtown Market is somewhere which is more in keeping with the older traditional markets - no air-conditioning, tarpaulin roof, sometimes there are no prices on display and a very interesting place to wander into - the mornings being the opportune time.

The amount of fruits there is quite substantial.

But there are trucks outside the market who sell in bulk - so every so often you will see vegetables on sale in enormous quantities - bags of limes for example. But I am not sure where I have seen the pumpkin used in a Thai dish - that lost me.

This is not a market which has been set up for the tourist - it is quite rare to see one here - which does make it all the more authentic. This makes it all the more reason to visit BECAUSE you have no clue as to what it is and makes it all the more interesting to visit.

So what is all is some of these things? Well I am at a loss with what this is, I have no idea?

Then the displays of dried or drying fish.

Then there is the Sino-Portuguese building adjacent to it - I have no more information about whose this place is than knowing it is there AND there is no information on the net regarding it!

You can have breakfast around the corner at many places OR the place for lunch is Downtown Kao Kaeng.

Rung market

Rung Market is behind Robinson's - a Thai Department store in Phuket Town. Behind Robinson's is where there is a local market.

This is a wonderful place to visit in the early morning, approximately 6am. The market sells all the traditional things for a Thai market. It is carefully divided into parts;

meat

and more meat

fish

foods to consume

and foods to cook with.

Then there are the traditional foods drying. Flowers to buy and around the outside are clothes to buy and more food to buy for breakfast - it is always popular.

Then there are the traditional street sellers who seem to simple wait.

Then there are the small places where you are able to purchase animals to release somewhere - Feng Shang.

Then there are the traditional singing birds for sale.

After the market finishes about 10 am the inside market is cleared and food stalls are then put up to surround the market.

Kathu fresh market

Fresh markets are a wonderful place to go for a number of reasons

You get a real idea of what the local Thai people eat.

The fruit is so yummy.

Still not sure about the Durian though...

The flowers are beautiful in the mornings (whoops, forget to mention that markets are best visited in the the earlier hours).

Then you can pay respects to a small Buddhist temple which is nearby.

Then there were the pile of shoes? Local markets are always worth visiting if you are in Phuket.

Borae - Local Market

Borae Market is somewhere quite close to our home so we have been more than once but I have realised that I have not posted for 5 years.

Borae Market is somewhere you would visit if you were looking for a very typical food market.

Always a fascinating selection of seafood to choose from.

I have seen these giant sea snails previously - but I have never tried them myself.

Then there were the more traditional snails which seemed to be trying to get out of the box?

The selection is varied and I always wonder what I will find next - I am still unsure as to what these are.

Local Market - Wat Thepnimit

Wat Thepnimit is a Wat which I have visited a number of times over the years for the early morning Songkran celebrations. It is only about 3km outside Phuket Town and on the way to Chalong - the first time that I visited it was a stange place because you could not actually see the Wat from the road but just the school.

In the afternoons (on the empty football field opposite) there is a large market swiftly put up. There is actually a Chinese Shrine currently being built in the far corner... This did mean though that there were a lot of young children at the market!!

This is a traditional Thai Market and visit here if you wish to visit a real Thai market versus a Tourist Attraction.

There is the raw food which you may not want to see and for many will be too much.

As many times as I visit I do not know about these deep fried whole chickens - have you tried one?

I was surprised to see the fresh frogs - peeled and ready for the grill.

And then look down and see the frogs ready to be set free.

Then there were the usual bits and pieces - the handbags and the used shoes.

Then the was the wonderful grocery items - the fresh vegetables and the fresh fish.
