Amulet Alley in Phuket Town

I have posted previously here about visiting here but last week I decided to take the side street again and I was pleasantly surprised with what I found.

The atmosphere was obviously one of business and other people preparing their wares for the rest of the day. The sellers sat and were either reading the paper or inspecting their wares.

The people down the street were so pleasant to me I think that I will visit again but the amulets are clearly very special to the wearer and after asking a number of my friends I am none the wiser as how to ascertain how much one should pay - will keep that for another post.

Not sure what this was here for though?

Sirin's Bag Shop

When any of the visitors to Thailand think about handbags they automatically think of the plethora of handbags that can be purchased at a great many tourist destinations around Phuket.

What there is in Phuket Old Town though is a very special little shop that I know might interest you - Sirins.

Sirins is opposite Phuket Coffee or Gallery Coffee - which is on the other side of the road - I am happy to wait here whilst Chuen (my lovely wife) is shopping.

Ao Yon Waterfall

We were attending the Ao Yon Boat Race and I decided to visit the Ao Yon Waterfall at the same time. The sign is unreadable but is big - follow the winding road that it indicates to and then take the left hand road when it splits.

The road is thin (but with tarmac) and it winds to a complete dead end (as seen above). Park the car and then walk into the forest - turning right....

There is some good luck gained from swimming in the bottom of the waterfall (I am led to believe) but I have to admit that I was a little worried about snakes.

Wat Kathu

I never tire of visiting Buddhist temples - I have recently read that there are at least 26 Buddhist temples in Phuket - which means that there a few more that I need to visit!

This temple is close to the Kathu Chinese Shrine - which I have previously visited early in the morning for the preparations for the Vegetarian Festival Parade to Sapan Hin - a must if you are here.

Kathu Temple has a number of buildings which are part of it - making the area that is regarded as Temple Grounds quite large. I have read that the Temple also serves as a Educational point and now the outlying buildings make sense.

What I do notice now is that there are homes built for the monks who make up part of the temple.

There was more than one area to pray to the Buddha and temple was clearly taken care off - we made a donation, put up some flowers and rang the bell - we always enjoy our visits. Make them with

The most spectacular part of Kathu Temple is the splendid building which is white - wonderful - why it is white I do not know, but if anybody does know please tell me (thisis2tim@yahoo.co.uk).

Guan-yin Chinese Goddess statue

The Kuanyin image in the foreground hints of the Mahayana influences of Chinese origin. Kuanyin is a Buddhist deity found only in the Mahayana or Northern Tradition's Buddhist text. The Southern tradition typified by Sri Lankan, Burmese and Thai Buddhist practice do not normally worship what is popularly known as the Goddess of Mercy and Chinese Goddess of Compassion.

I visit a great many Thai Wats and even more Chinese Shrines whilst I am living here in Phuket and I am always visiting them.
