Museum of Thai pharmacy

The Museum of Thai pharmacy is somewhere which I had read about on the Internet and was pretty close to where I was going - so I wondered down a side road...

It is on the third floor of the Pharmaceutical Association of Thailand under Royal Patronage Building at 40 Soi Santisuk, Sukhumvit 38 Road.

In the Museum of Thai pharmacy there are apparently a number various topics - the Birth of Pharmacy, the Evolution of Oriental Pharmacy and Basic Wisdom, the Evolution of Western Thai Pharmacy and the Evolution of Herbs and Natural Products - thanks Richard Barrow.

Tin Mining in Phuket - an introduction

Tin Mining is something I first learnt about because I had close friends who worked for Thaisarco in Phuket - even getting a tour of the smelter...

Then there was the time that I wanted to have a coffee again in Phuket but Coffee Circle was not open so I wandered around a round-about with this vehicle around it...

The next time was when I was asked to find out about the culture and history of Phuket - so I went to the Phuket Cultural Centre.

Then there was the Kathu Tin Mine Museum to find out information.

Then there are the links from the Phuket Thai Hua Museum in Phuket Town.

There are a lot of things to investigate...

Thavorn Hotel / Museum

The Thavorn Hotel (updating with this link?) was one of the first hotels in Phuket Town (with the On On Hotel) - there were similarities but with the recent remodelling of the On On Hotel the Thavorn Hotel certainly feels older today.

There are a great many interesting things culturally in Phuket but I do like this one. The museum might not be open (or lights on) when you arrive.

When you walk through into the front (the Reception Desk on the right) there is a door to the left which may or may not be open.

Which hotels use these still...

The cost was still 30 Baht to enter - there does not seem to be very much more  than the last time I visited but this time I did look a lot more closely and goodness me we are very lucky that this has been kept.

Keep looking when you come out - turn to the left to the 'Boardroom'.

There are interesting pictures on the wall - from the date of my birth!!

It is certainly something to visit the list of interesting things is quite endless -  if you are interested.

The list is endless – worth a visit. 'Thavorn Hotel - a quirky museum' - please have a look.

The Phuket Thai Hua Museum

Phuket Thai Hua Museum is a relatively new construction and if you are interested in the development and History of Phuket this is a must to visit.

There are a number or rooms and the list is best investigated on their website.

  4) Patronage
  6) The Chinese of Phuket

  7) The Tin-Mining Era

  8) Attire

 12) Precious Heritage

What a fabulous place - I could not spend enough time here to take in all of the information which is provided.

My favourite was the information about the food is particular to Phuket - definitely  worth a wander through Phuket Town looking for the Local stalls.

Phuket Cultural Centre

what are these sticks with the book? - book marks?
Phuket Cultural Centre was a find purely because i was asked about it and I knew very little about it - so i visited it the next week.

The centre is on the grounds of the Rajabhat University and there was one sign to it as we drove the road.

The Phuket Cultural Centre is described by Rajabhat as - 'A presentation of arts, culture and artefacts from the area of the Andaman Coast'.

The actual building is not one that one who have thought housed such a treasure of artefacts. The building is unassuming and looks in need of a degree of care BUT it is there and this is what matters.

On entering the building it was a little disarming because there was nobody there and there was no indication or directions that we could go in but we did. I was taken there by Thai person and this did help as they knocked on a door and the staff came to assist us (reminding me of a visit to the Thavorn Museum where they put the lights on).

When they did I was immediately taken with the plethora of items that there were on display in and out of the cabinets.

this is a weighing tool for the dredged tin?
The actual building was divided into areas with a different focus.

an example of the Baba living in Phuket
do you think they need a DJ?

Fascinating things - do you remember when a camera was a camera?

a seeming well used or old Mahjong set - is it Ivory?
- Ron Thai Phuket Room: showing us the life in Phuket
an example of a floating device for very young children
a beautiful Chinese Calligraphy box (i also have one)

- Cultural Information Room: collection of information in a variety of formats
Military Caps? - reminding me of A Town Like Alice

 - Cultural Heritage Room: ornaments, implements and more locally made

 - Buddhism Room: sandalwood carving, Thalang history and details of the Heroines actions

Phuket Town - Chinpracha House

Chinpracha House is also known as Baan Chinpracha and can be found in Phuket Old Town on Krabi Road leading to Central Festival.

Please do not be put off by the winding dirt road that leads to Chinpracha House. Mr Tan Ma Siang, who was locally known as Praptik Chinprach, built Baan Chinpracha in 1903. The home was built in the “Angmor Lounge” style – it was the first house in Phuket that was built in this style.

There are a plethora of interesting things to see - take your time.  The owner's family and friends purchased many of the pieces in his home in Europe, for example the ceramic floor tiles were imported from Italy and the fences were imported from Holland. This is similar to some of the items and ceramic tiles at Panwa House in the South of Phuket.

The property is still in the family and the current owners are sixth-generation Thai descendants of the original builder. In fact the current family live upstairs still.

The property was used in the Oliver Stone movie ‘Heaven and Earth’, there is a signed thank you note on the wall in one of the rooms.

The property has a lot of charm and is wonderful to walk around – this is a special place to visit. For only 130 Baht it is a treasure not to be missed.

I understand that Phuket Heritage Trail will take you there if you choose to take a guided tour of Phuket Old Town with them...
