Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok

Chatuchak  Market is somewhere that if you are in Bangkok you must visit because it is so much fun. There is their website -

"Chatuchak Weekend Market (or Jatujak Market; Thai: ตลาดจตุจักร) is one of the world's largest weekend markets covers area of 70 rai (27 Acres) altogether divided into 27 Sections, contains more than 15,000 booths selling goods from every part of Thailand."

"Chatuchak Weekend Market, is very popular shopping centre to Thais and has become a popular place to tourists and foreigners who stay in Bangkok, has over 200,000 visitors each day (SAT-SUN) 30% is foreign.

Almost everything can be found here at a bargaining local price (not a tourist price), and most vendors actually come from local factories, like antique wood carving, clay handicrafts, local souvenirs from every parts of Thailand, Buddhist amulets, wooden funitures, hand made decorated flowers, plant, ceramic wares, dools, Thai Bejarong, Chinese wares, graden decorated plants, stones, trendy fashions, silk, hill-tribe outfits, fluffy dogs and more miscellaneous, etc."

Then they are also on Facebook. Wikipedia has some pretty good available information. There is a good meeting place in the middle of the market - the Clocktower.

"The clock tower is the famous meeting point in Chatuchak Market. Clock tower was built in 2530 on the occasion of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 60 th Birthday Anniversary on the 5 th of December 2530, in the cooperation of the Market Administration and Thai-Chinese Merchant Association"

Yes there is almost everything here - there is an App to guide you round the market (which is reviewed here) but it's not always easy - I think you should relax, wander and enjoy yourself. However if you are on a 'mission' shopping then you must remember to write a list.

I am not sure about the animals that there are here for sale though?

Something for everyone - there's simply too much to make a record of.

27 section of Chatuchak Market

  • Clothing & Accessories (sections 2-6, 10-26)
  • Handicrafts (sections 8-11)
  • Ceramics (sections 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 25)
  • Furniture and Home Decoration (sections 1,3,4,7,8)
  • Food and Beverage (sections 2, 3, 4, 23, 24, 26, 27)

Like any market in Thailand - there is food everywhere.

If you need dog clothing it is here...
So how do you get there?

"Chatuchak Market is open on Saturdays and Sundays, 09:00 – 18:00, and Fridays 18:00 – 24:00. You can get to Chatuchak Market by the sky train (BTS) to Mo Chit Station and taking exit no.1 and follow the crowd until you see a small entrance to the market. Another way to get to the market is by taking the subway (MRT) to Chatuchak Park Station take exit no.1 and then following the crowd until you see a small entrance to the market. Moreover, you can take taxis, buses and vans to get to Chatuchak Market or if you are driving to the market, you can park your cars at Chatuchak Park Ride and they have convenient shuttle buses between the parking lots and Chatuchak Market."

Phuket Weekend Market (ตลาดนัดเจ้าฟ้าวาไรตี้) - an overview.

This is a must to visit if you are visiting Phuket over the Weekend. Could I write down what there is for sale - absolutely not - but it is fun.

I would certainly make a visit if you were fortunate enough to be there on the Weekend. The market seems to have very little management but I can be sure that there is - how could such an enormous piece of land with a plethora of sites work if it was not managed?

Can anyone pay me to make a map like the App of Chatuchack Weekend Market in Bangkok or the Phuket Town Treasure Map?

Would I try the food - yes I would - should you? Think twice because some of it is wonderful but is not for everybody..

Then there are the articles for your personal beauty - got no idea about this but if they can make fake purses I could imagine that they can make fake perfumes - but then if it smells the same does it matter?

They DO NOT have the total range that they have in Patong because obstensiously the market was for Thai people not the visiting Westerner. I do hope (like the Thai people themselves) that they do not sell themselves out to the highest bidder.

Keep PATONG for the Tourist and the Weekend Market for the Thai.

I believe that the market was first a draw for the local Thai people and has subsequently begun to be a tourist attraction.

There is a Supercheap next to the market, parking and coffee shop opposite and a Wat adjacent to this.

Happy Shopping.

The Weekend market opposite Wat Naka is open from 16:00 until 10:00 each Saturday and Sunday.

There are a number of different items for sale are enormous and I have blogged about this previously
but on reflection I think that it may be easier to look at the types of thing for sale here.
I have started a list.

Phuket Weekend Market - food

Phuket Weekend Market is certainly an attraction if you are visiting Phuket and it is also popular with the local people - there is sooooo much food to be had - we have visited a number of times....

ever what happened to these vehicles?
The market is effectively a football field which is divided into 2 halves and 50% of it sells food! The local Thai people come here for the wide selection of dishes and the fact that it is so big. So please bear in mind that the dishes are not cooked for the tourist but for the Thai people.

The market opens at approximately 4pm and finishes at approximately 10pm but this is never exact. There are a plethora of different types of items to find in the ever increasing number of stalls that each time we go I find something different!

If it rains then you may well get wet because half of the market is standing on the football field. Pushing a pram or the suchlike is very difficult because of the quality of the floor and the fact that the 'corridors' can be so tight...

There are toilets there which you can use  but remember to go there with some loose change with you - the last time we went I believe that the cost of this was 5 Baht.

So what foods do they have in half a football field?

Bits of animals that I cannot be sure of...

The cakes look delicious.

The chips are scrumptious - see if you can find them making the curly fries, it is a very clever machine...

Then there are the fish cakes - to nibble whilst wandering about.

If you really are in need for a kebab I was surprised that I found one here.

Not sure what a 'fish strip is' though...

Then it was time for an egg.

We then chose to sit down at one of the many tables and we had fish baked in sea salt (something worth trying whilst in Thailand).

Then you must have a herbed sausage whilst you are sitting here.

Then it was time for a pudding - we tried this Japanese ice-cream - certainly very different (not that I would have it again personally).

There are more that we did not try which I was surprised about - Japanese food and a lot of different stalls.

Then the strange bread and butter...

I suggest that you go hungry to the Weekend Market because it is a lot of fun trying all these different dishes. More about the Weekend Market will be written but older postings are below.

Weekend Market - Personal Aggression

I always like to visit the Weekend Market because there is always something different that I find. In the same breadth I do not know whether it would be  a good idea to go to Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok because it has at least 5 times as many stalls!!!!

The post today is about the articles of Physical Aggression which you are able to purchase here - I am mildly shocked that nothing is done about these items for sale

Be that as it may I do not think that you will have the permission to buy one of these items and taking in your luggage and certainly not your hand luggage!

Weekend Market - Food

The Weekend Market is a place where you all should visit if you are in Phuket during a weekend. There are any number of reasons why you should visit and this week I am sharing with you the amount of food that there is for sale here - probably why the Weekend Market is so popular with the locals and the Tourists alike - the amount of food for sale.

Of couse to be a sensationalist you should try to have a few bugs to eat but that is not the only choice for you to have - there is an enormous selection.

Pieces of animal - prepared in a plethora of ways.
Japanese Sushi - any number of different choices.
Cakes - a lot of them.
Satay.
Fresh crab, squid and fish.
Deep fried potato twirls.
Miang Kum
and a lot lot more

The Weekend market opposite Wat Naka is open from 16:00 until 10:00 each Saturday and Sunday.

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones at the Phuket Weekend Market

This was not what I expected to write about!
Okay you are able to buy a number of pirated CDs and DVDs but there is so much more at the Phuket Weekend Market than one first thinks that one may find.

Every time that I visit there is something that I have not seen previously!

This does mean that sometimes when you return then you will not find what that you had seen previously - I would suggest that (unless you live here) then if you see something specific then buy it straight away because it might not be there next time.

Weekend Market - Clothes and Shoes

There are a great many number of places that can sell you clothes whilst you wander around the Weekend Market and there is an even great amount of places which you can buy shoes!
Muay Thai Boxing shorts - a common request
Not being a 'clothes person' I am not that keen on taking photographs of the clothes that are for sale. But I do notice a number of things -

note the Dr Beats Headphones
1) There is not a wide range of clothes in terms of their sizes
2) There is not a lot of choice of the labelled clothes - here Patong is the winner.
3) Many of the clothes are for the Thai people and may not be appealing to the Foreign Visitor.
4) WOW - some of the clothes, particularly dresses are extremely cheap!

There are a great deal of shoes for sale - more than I could imagine and they are extremely cheap. But this means that the quality is not the best - the shoes here will probably last as long as your holiday. Do not be surprised that when you keep them for a year and you use then again the glue has dried out and they fall apart almost immediately.

The number of different items for sale are enormous and I have blogged about this previously but on reflection I think that it may be easier to look at the types of thing for sale here. I have started a list.
