Bang Neow Chinese Shrine and it's figurines

The figurines in the Chinese Shrines is an attraction for me and there are so many of them! I started to try to do this previously when I visited Jui Tui Chinese Shrine and I haven't really got much further than then - but I will have a go.

I found a website with a list of Chinese God's names - but without full description and images.

Then another website I searched through...

Mysterious Lady of the 9th Heaven - I think

Cai Shen - God of Wealth (i think)

Juan Ti - God of War and Fortune Telling

So I have not been able to do this again...

The next post will be the corner of the feminine gods....

Chinese Temple Shopping

Never seen this guy with a book!

There are a number of Chinese Shrines in Phuket and I hope to visit them all. What is in the shrines though are all the figurines that are stacked inside.

I have tried to name them all here on this post but am still finding more icons.

In fact this is a brand new one which I do not think I have ever seen in a Chinese Shrine at all - have you?

The icons of the feminine are not very different at all

- not sure what this tells me but is this Kuan Yin?

I have found that there are three Chinese figurines most commonly bought for the home are Fuk (meaning Harmony) Luk (meaning Power) and Sau (meaning Longevity) - recognised by carrying a peach and a walking stick BUT I did not find a set here...

I did find Lee Loh Chia though - recognised with the spear and the Gold Hoop.

Not sure who these are however.

Then I was more surprised to see the pieces which are used for the Phuket Vegetarian Festival - wow...

Then there were the spears and an axe...

Then the spiked balls and looking carefully the whips on the shelf on the left.

I even found a radio with the music they play on the morning of the Festival!

Jui Tui Chinese Shrine and it's figurines

A fascinating thing to do is to look carefully at all of the figurines!

Le Loh Chia

This is the Spirit which leads the Phuket Vegetarian Festival.

Tsai Shen Yeh (God of Wealth)

One of the most powerful and popular Chinese Gods of Wealth is Tsai Shen Yeh who is frequently depicted wearing a dragon robe and sitting on a tiger.He also known at times as Lu Hsing the Star God of Wealth.

He carries a gold ingot and a sword. After he returned from a forest after studying the Tao, he was seen riding a black tiger in all directions and carrying a sword to ward off evil influences.

He is not meant to be worshipped but is there to symbolise money and wealth an attracts the same into the house. This is why he should be gold in colour (as the statue shown is) as like attracts like.

This is the God who looks after the Town or is referred to as the 'Religious Magistrate'.

Sun Wukong or The Monkey King

A favourite of many (including the media) because of his troublesome outcomes.

Wat Phra Nang Sang - Part Two

With so much to see I decided to divide this posting into two
- here is the link to Part One.

After finding the tribute to the Heroines we decided to look further to the back - at the back they seemed to be building more temples and two Yaks. What was surprising for me though was that these Yaks carried automatic machine guns...

Then there were the Murals of the Lord Buddha's life around the inside of a temple.

We wandered further and found that there was a temple which had the more traditional Buddhist statues covered in gold leaf. In this same temple was also the traditional paintings of a Buddhist story - unfortunately I was unable to take photographs of them all because of some construction.

I then climbed up to the top of a new construction and was drawn to the temple in the centre of the Wat - it was a square and was surrounded by a large snake figurine - wonderful. We investigated this area and found that it was actually the main temple which was surrounded by the dragon and below this where standing Buddha figurines.

There were Buddhist figurines scattered through this temple.

So much to see...

and more I did not understand - the Legend...

Sam Se Je Hud Chinese Shrine (ศาลเจ้าซำเซ้ จู้ฮุด เขารัง)

I have visited Sam Se Je Hud Chinese Shrine a number of times but they have not all been written about - for example the golden turtles anywhere else before?

Wonderful golden lions at the front of the shrine.

There is a man made waterfall behind and to the right.

You can reach the first part of the shrine over a bridge (if the gate is open)

Here are the standard figurines in the first part of the Shrine.

Then there is a corridor behind it (to the right and left).

There is a second part of the shrine behind the first one. There is a second shrine in construction above and to the right.

There is a third part of the shrine outside to the right! I personally love to visit here so there will be a post on this one shrine.

Enjoy the Shrine and remember to respect it
- take off your shoes and leave a donation.

Shrine of the Serene (Sang Tham Shrine)

The Sang Tham Shrine is also know as the Shrine of the Serene and it was initially named as 'Sin Jia Geng' and was founded by the Hokkien Chinese descendants of the Tan Lian Je family in 2434 B.E. (A.D. 1891).

'The architectural designs applied to the shrine derived from the traditional Hokkien Chinese influence as evidenced in the terracotta-tiled roof on the single-storey construction with various aesthetic melded figures of the propitious symbols elegantly decorated with traditional tiles. In the hall, the access floor was raised and paved with terracotta tiles and on both interior walls and series of murals called 'Si Yin Gui' was exhibited. The significant renovation was conducted in 2542 B.E. (A.D. 1999).

One year later, in 2543 B.E (A.D.2000), it was an auspicious occasion in celebration of the 109th Anniversary of the shrine by the administrative committee of the shrine and is now widely open to the public"

At the front (on the right) isn enclosed temple piece of the original temple enclosed in glass.

The open is very small but look out for the two grey stone dragons surrounded by a steel fence.

The walkway is quite thin and then it opens out into a much larger area - the remains of the initial shrine are enclosed in a glass display on the right.

At the back is a small shrine and on the side are smaller shrines - this has recently been decorated in the same style as Phuket Old Town.

Please remember to remove your shoes as you enter into the shrine. The shrine has a small incline so that people with difficulty walking are able to enter easily.

To each side (before you enter) are two paintings of the creatures protecting the shrine.

The doors may be small but they are also decorated with the protectors of the Shrine. Wait as you enter - remembering not to step on the entrance to the shrine but over it.
