After living in Phuket for 16 years we moved to Bangkok 

- here are some beaches to visit in Phuket.

Kata Beach is on the West coast of Phuket and is a long stretch of beach - not adorned with sunbeds and people trying to sell you something which you do not want.

Kata Beach is a popular beach of ours because it is quite a long stretch of beach and the tide goes out  long way which leaves a big width of sand to play in.

Disadvantages are that there does not seem to be any degree of public management of the waste that comes onto the beach and that there are red flags posted.

So we go to the very Northern end of the beach where there is a natural inlet and the waves are not big BUT we DO NOT enter when the red flags are up. We do take some food with us however because the main food sellers are towards the South - so take something with you.

Since the coup in 2014 we have not been back so the 'Fisherman Restaurant' on the side may well have been pulled down - it was still there when we looked...



The sun beds may not also be allowed to set up here...

Kata Beach is actually a very long beach with a number of with a number of hotels - we spent our Honeymoon at Mom Tri Royale, a lovely place. 

There did not seem to be many people when we visited (well the North End) - there was a lot of action there whilst we visited. As you can see we were quite close to the edge of the road.

But we spent most of our time running back and forth to the water.

Then coming back for a snack. We were offered food by sales persons walking past and we usually had the ice creams - the fried rice was no longer cooked on the beach but cooked on the other side of the food and they had a 'runner' for them. We lay there in the shade  or played in the ocean - but it is worth it.

BUT the South End seemed to be more occupied towards renting out the paragliding.

Always worth a go once and understand there are jet-ski but I am not so sure about that!

The whole of the east side of the island does have red flags during the year (between April and October usually) and I would suggest not swimming but thank you to the Lifeguards who have been there this year (2016).

We stayed close to the edge for the shade

whilst there were seats and umbrellas to rent. There is a Live Web Cam above the Foto Hotel (far above it) and there are also a number of hotels - thanks Jamie

We dropped off on Kata Beach for an ice cream after a hard game of golf with Jemma at Dino Golf.

After our last visit in January I was surprised at how messy it was.

The weather was windy though and the red flags were out?

7 am start with a morning registration, beach clean up and Ocean awareness.

Nui beach in Phuket

You can get to Nui Beach on a long tail boat from Kata Noi (1,500 Baht) or over a bumpy, long, dirt road which is quite scary in a car AND the road was dry.

It is a beach which you must pay to visit - 250 Baht per adult and 125 Baht for children. You do get a sunbed, drink and an umbrella for this.  What you pay for is the luxury of being away from it all and you are not bothered.  The sea is clear and there is a lovely view.


The let down is the sand - it is not sand at all but more like grit.


A nice place to escape to and to add to the experience I would go by long tailed boat.

Jim Thompsons Silk - it is not necessary to write a long history of Jim Thompson and his role in the emergence of the Thai silk trade.  It is certainly important and the silk produced by the company is always of high quality.

There are a number of outlets in Phuket:

Central Festival - Phuket Town

Phuket International Airport
Canal Village - Laguna
Kata Thani Beach Resort and Spa
Le Meridien Hotel
Turtle Village

but we like to shop at 'The Courtyard' because it is a Factory Outlet with a lot of discount.

Shops on the side of the road sometimes look as if they don't have a door and they seem to go on forever at the back.

Okay they don't always have the Beat's headphones and the Cartier watch but they do have interesting bits.

We wanted a pair of Muay Thai boxing shorts - they didn't have any gloves though.

There are places like this all over Phuket and what they have is dependent on when they are in Phuket - Patong has a lot of fakes and big T.Shirts; Kata and Karon have swimming toys and beach wear; Phuket Town has bits and pieces.

This row is opposite Ocean Plaza (just realised that I have not been here since 2010) and Robinsons in Phuket Town.  My favourite shop is still Radsada Handmade though.

If you just need something then Phuket Town is a place to look but if it is not convenient there are a great many more places to find like this - some are more quirky than others.
